Oil on rope

Right I'm gonna go for it! Chained and in a pillow case on low spin, 600 spin rather than 1400. Detergent or no detergent that is the question?

I dont put mine in a pillow case either because it makes it one big lump, i just put it in on its own, it does require an untangle when it comes out tho.

they say you shouldnt put soap powder in because it can rot ur rope, but i do anyway.. i also replace my rope every few years or so.

I've read that about washing powder but lots do it, cant see the oil coming out otherwise

Hold on tight when you next descend I had the same problem but with my helmet, straps and inners were soaked through with oil, bit of scrubbing with swarfega and it was a gooden! Not sure about fairy liquid on rope though!

I have often washed ropes but only to get mud etc off, I doubt that you'd be able to wash oil off at all effectively (or if you did, you'd have to use a detergent that would damage the rope).

 

If it was my rope, I'd buy a new one and either scrap the old, or cut the oily bit off and have a shorter one.

 

It really isn't worth the risk (and it might not be your life it costs).

Buy a rope cleaner and let it soak on luke warm water, followed by a wash in the solution and a wash with plain water. You should be able to tell if there is oil still in rope. I put my ropes in the washing machine all the time, just chain them up and evenly lay them in the tub
