Drax is just a con. By burning biomass it extends the life of a dirty inefficient coal fired power station. The government should have stuck to its Carbon rules which would have closed this dinosaur instead they bent the rules and have allowed it to continue. What really annoys me is the amount of biomass used by Drax could heat and power twice as many homes if used efficiently.

The quarry I drive from had a partnership with a newly formed energy company, the biggest part of it was goverment grant. Never built it to a capable spec, in over 2 years it never got officially commissioned(has to run 28 consecutive days to achieve this) Company went bust. Now it lays dormant awaiting its future. Its purpose was to run on low grade shredded wood waste.

A further waste of taxpayers cash, but if it had worked, only a few would be rolling in cash now.

I heard an interesting program on the radio a while back, according to them the Mafia are heavily involved in the wind turbine industry, milking the EU subsidies.

The sooner we get out of the whole corrupt den of thieves that is the EU the better.

Why is OK to ship oil and coal, but not chip/timber??

Oil and gas are much much higher in energy per weight/volume.

Typically crude is four times as dense as green wood, three times as dense as seasoned wood and twice as much as kiln dried wood with less than 5% moisture.

So much more potential energy moved per energy spent moving it.

A large percentage of the product such as miscanthus going into Drax is brought in direct by train & comes from the states, they have huge stockpiles that have been there years. Not sure if this is to change or whether it will be mixed as it is now with willow.
