Costs of running a business..

I do frequently work Saturdays on my own, hedgecutting or mowing.

Maintenance and grinding isn't a problem if its cold although the grinding sometimes can be too messy if the gardens are boggy.

However..this is France and getting a Frenchy to work the sacred weekend is an uphill struggle.

For the first time in months my associate has finally worked a Saturday and only because a client shouted loud enough.

Sundays...well, it is forbidden to make noise at all in many communes and certainly impossible to get a Frenchman to work.

I think we can learn allot from the French, we live in a culture of work, work, work and no play.... I work seven days a week to keep up with the compitition, I think if we all chilled out and lived by a similar culture then our lives will be allot more play!!

Rick, don't be fooled into thinking that it's all sitting round quaffing wine in some wisteria covered terrace talking to friendly peasant types.

If you are charging a day rate that require you to work 7 days, something needs to change, IMO.

I can survive on 3 days, do OK on 4 and do well on 5. I only work a weekend day to replace a lost day in the week.

I do quote on Saturday AM over the winter, evening over the summer, but quoting never feels like work to me.

Exactly right me and another guy i work for prefer 3-4 day weeks easy short days, recently another guy i work for used to work 5-6 hard days a week for peanuts, hes now like us much better to put your prices up win less work but on the whole you end up far better off. Less stressful your body doesnt take such a hammering. Nothing worse than a busy fool!

I agree but I work 5 days if the work load needs but if I want a day off then I take it. Life's to short to be working 6-7 days a week. I knew a guy who worked 7 days a week, all his gear was knackered but this is because he charged peanuts for work.

Recently, we always seem to be a steady 4 weeks in advance but with the poor weather we have had a few 4 and 3 days weeks which has put us well behind.

I find that working in really poor weather conditions just stuffs me up for the rest of the week.

I'm happy to claw this back on fine weekends later in the year but as ever...I'm up against the French work ethic of drinking wine on wisteria covered terraces whenever there is real work to be done...hhhh!

  • 1 year later...

6 days a week. 2 teams. And we do 3 days (30ish) quotes each week.

Some days are more work and longer than others.

We invest heavily in advertising.

We all love the work we do and the fact that our profit goes towards helping people who's lives are a mess turn things round.

Our customers like the fact they get a good job done and are helping support a charity at the same time..
