3 bed semidetached victorian sandstone icebox, was taking £2k a year in gas when we moved in, then we insulated attic and put in dovre 7kw stove in main room, can't now stand the heat in there with the door shut, it heats the whole hallway (cavernous) and takes chill off whole upstairs on a 15kg basket of logs a day. Gas bill including cooking and hot water down to £600 a year.

We thought about a back boiler and link into central heating radiators but the cost was terrifying. We now use both systems, stove for real free heat and central heating for occasional boosts or lazy moments and for hot water.

I have just added up my gas I'll for this year, £1500 ish!

I have a 2 bedroom semi detached and that's with a log fire heating 2 rooms.

I keep meaning to get a log burner installed, I wasn't going to bother with radiators as we have a combi boiler, and have heard that can be tricky to work together. Although I have heard of a centraliser.

Your thoughts please and an idea of your gas bills would be appreciated if you don't mind sharing:001_smile:

It,s not very glamorous but try to improve your insulation as it will pay for itself quicker than anything else. Yes some will say logs are free but if you burn them you can't sell them.

This our set up

Free standing log burner in large two bedroom barn conversion with no gas or oil. All electric with Ground source heat pump and PV but wood burner does most of the space heating.

Electricity used about £500 and 7-8 m3 logs per year

200 year old cottage, solid walls, unstoppable damp, more drafts than a drafty place.

was using about 2500lts of oil a year for heating and h/w.

fitted an open fire in my office, and a 8kw morso stove in the living room.

down to about 800lts for this year.

we looked at getting a stove with boiler, added the bits up, came to around £3,500

rang 3 HETAS reg. firms up for prices......

The cheapest we could get it supplied and fitted for was £6,500

When asked, the plumber quite happily admitted that he was charging me about £3,000 to £3,500 for the weeks work it'd take to fit it !!!!!!!

And people say Tree surgeons are expensive !!!!!!!!

2 open fires in a stone gate house, single glazed. I think we're on course to use 500l of oil, one hour in the morning for central heating and hot water. It can get a bit nippy and the fires are quite high maintenance. Would love a wood burner, but as tenants it's a bit tricky. I'm sure the estate won't mind though....

In my business premises I use a 8kw stove to heat it. Its about 1000 square feet with a single skin roof. I am going to buy a 20kw later on in the year. I can burn all my sawdust and offcuts as well as logs so I save on landfill costs of about £600 a year. Just about talked the missus into a woodburning stove in the house. Our gas bill in a 3 bedroom end terraced house with double glazing and cavity wall insulation is mental, about 1200 a year. My wife has arthritis and feels the cold very easy and then her joints start to ache. At present we have a condensing boiler system. I dont intend to link it in to the gas boiler so it will still be used for the hot water and maybe for an hour first thing in the morning.
