200 year old cottage, solid walls, unstoppable damp, more drafts than a drafty place.

was using about 2500lts of oil a year for heating and h/w.

fitted an open fire in my office, and a 8kw morso stove in the living room.

down to about 800lts for this year.

we looked at getting a stove with boiler, added the bits up, came to around £3,500

rang 3 HETAS reg. firms up for prices......

The cheapest we could get it supplied and fitted for was £6,500

When asked, the plumber quite happily admitted that he was charging me about £3,000 to £3,500 for the weeks work it'd take to fit it !!!!!!!

And people say Tree surgeons are expensive !!!!!!!!

2 open fires in a stone gate house, single glazed. I think we're on course to use 500l of oil, one hour in the morning for central heating and hot water. It can get a bit nippy and the fires are quite high maintenance. Would love a wood burner, but as tenants it's a bit tricky. I'm sure the estate won't mind though....

In my business premises I use a 8kw stove to heat it. Its about 1000 square feet with a single skin roof. I am going to buy a 20kw later on in the year. I can burn all my sawdust and offcuts as well as logs so I save on landfill costs of about £600 a year. Just about talked the missus into a woodburning stove in the house. Our gas bill in a 3 bedroom end terraced house with double glazing and cavity wall insulation is mental, about 1200 a year. My wife has arthritis and feels the cold very easy and then her joints start to ache. At present we have a condensing boiler system. I dont intend to link it in to the gas boiler so it will still be used for the hot water and maybe for an hour first thing in the morning.

First thing is to check your contract for gas, if you have been "rolled over" you will probably be able to get a better rate by changing.

Before that I would check that they haven't been measuring in cubic feet and charging by cubic metre... It happens!

We live in a 3 bed 400 year old thatched cottage with no double glazing and 2ft thick walls. I struggle to stop all the drafts and we heat mainly with a 7kw Jotul multifuel on 99% logs. To back this up we have an oil fired Rayburn.

We spend around £400 a year on oil and I haven't the faintest how much wood goes through the burner. I just keep stacking at one end and it goes out of the other. Elec is around £700 a year.

Rayburn goes on in the morning to generate hot water and a burst of heat fromn the rads. The OH would use it more if we fixed it. Currently it only heats the rads when the hot water is on and finding a Rayburn engineer that a) hasn't a full order book; b)doesn't charge £400 to get off his ar5e is would be another thread on its own.

Jotul is in the lounge at one end of the house. Ecofan on the top of the inset stove and another fan wafts the warm air back through the house.

Biggest trick is convincing the other half that 16-18 Deg.C is an acceptable. If she is too cold then put some bl**dy clothes on! ;)

Our gas bills have just went nuts, I think I am going to get the electronic thermostat checked, our system is on, off, on, off all the time!!

I know how much work logs are, whether they are free or not.

So have mine Steve, since we switched to eon, they have now told us the £80 per month direct debit is going up to £205 per month! ( gas and electric) I said I know we are using more gas as we have a new baby in the house but that's crazy. They then said I owe them £250. I have just switched us back to British Gas who have looked at our figures and say our direct debit per month will be £90. We have started using the woodburner from when we get up to when we go to bed. Just wondering if an Eco fan would help??
