we regularly end up in the situation of taking down stone dead trees with no access for a mewp , if you ensure that your round the main stem then you cant really go far wrong ! it is more a case of experience rather than right and wrong , if your not sure about something then question why your not sure and what could be done to overcome the problem ! if you still can not see a way round it then don't do it !! In this case the option of using a dead branch as a main anchor point could be overcome by going round the main stem and ensuring where possible you have either strop round the stem or a second line Just in case . However if your asking if you can anchor on dead branches then i fear my friend you need to gain more experience within your tree knowledge and characteristics of timber coupled with becoming more competent as a climber before taking on jobs where you may need to consider anchoring on dead or suspect limbs/branches.

other than that you may well be experienced and fancy a bit of Sunday afternoon banter lol

We have a little saying on our team...

If EVER you find yourself thinking 'I wonder if.....'

The answer is Absolutely NOT - find another way where you KNOW that you/the lowered section etc. WILL be fine.

No exceptions. If you need to ask the question - the answer is NO.

No doubt the odd super macho will say otherwise but this is just my opinion.
