sods law, you will get a bomb proof phone and never drop it!

the old phones were pretty solid, the ones with the extending aerial the size of a brick.

i drove over mine all day with a minidigger and didnt realise it till i heard it ring when i was wading thru the mud and found it. quick wipe off and job done.

i am on my 3rd in 3 months but they are insured, so they just post out a new handset.

samsung m110 from tmobile £40 /dust & damp proof

...Got mine a month ago, having given up on the Sonim XP1, the original JCB tough phone. The XP1 software is out of the ark: I couldn't get hold of polyphonic ringtones (though I know a man who does but that's with the JCB phone, a black and yellow '£30 more' version of the all black XP1).

The worst thing with the XP1 was that the Bluetooth was incompatible with the comms system in a D40 Navara: exactly 30 seconds into any conversation, whether made or received, and the Bluetooth cut out.

Sonim told me (eventually) that there was nothing they could do.

So... the phone's very strong but don't expect bells and whistles with it.

samsung m110 solid is a good phone, had mine for about six months now after a samsung m65. samsung m110 is about the same as a jcb phone with regards to the standards of shock resistance and water resistance. Got mine on http://www.mobilefun.com, sim free. And it fits in the phone pocket on stretch air trousers nicely!

why not just get a cheap nokia 5140i off ebay, I have an old one i can use.

I have an iphone 3g at the moment but have got hold of my free sims from O2 and the plan is to keep a free pay 'through the nose' sim in the 5140i and forward all calls from the iphone (business number) to the cheap, bombproof phone.

Or

Try keeping your phone in the truck and answer messages when you get down, saves a lot of hassle and damaged phones. Plus I find nothing much more annoying when there are 2 climbers in a tree and every time I turn around my climbing buddy is on the bloody blower! aaargh! :scared1:

Some good sensible suggestions posted above, thanks for those.

I already keep a good phone (blackberry) in the truck and have my calls forwarded from the other handset. I find with it being my firm i do need to answer calls through out the day rather than just checking messages occasionally, if i did not some of the lads would just sit around doing nowt with there excuse being "we tried to call you"

I guess the cheaper nokia option would work well, but the shiny new "bomb proof" phone is still tempting:001_smile:

I have just been on ebay and bought a new key pad for my 5140i as I gave to the phone to my 1 year old when he was teething to stop him chewing the good phone. He chewed the keys of the bloody phone so needed a new pad.

The 5140i is pretty good, I was once dsmantling and ash in the wet and sleet and snow, all the choggs were thrown into the same pile. Only when I got down couldn't find the phone so we rang it and it was plugged about4 inches into the mud under the choggs with probably a tonne plus of wood on it and it still worked! :001_tongue:

i have a nokia 6300, and its bombproof, its been dropped many times in puddles, survived the washing machine twice, and i climb with it in my back pocket all the time and it is still fine. and you can pick it up for only £50.
