Let em get on with it. It will only last so long. Alot of European timber is worthles due to shot and shrapnel from the conflicts of the last century. The USA and Canada have long term biomass contracts with uk power stations. We as an island dont have enough forest to be independent. The days of the uk paying the higher value for products have waned away. The Eastern Europeans have returned home in large numbers.

Generally the smaller producer will keep his local clients I reckon.

At a recent eco show I was displaying at, everybody we talked to asked where the logs came from and were pleased when we could name the local estates we had bought timber in from. I recently picked up a new customer who refused to buy logs from his local garden centre as they were from Russia so I think a lot of the buying public do mind where there wood comes from.

It occurs to me that this timber from Russia and similar Baltic states was right in the slot when Chenoble went up. Does wood carry radio activity?.

We wont stop imports, if anyone wants a container full direct then you can easily find 20 companies prepared to sell it to you direct.

I came across a national firewood seller the other day who when I quizzed them said their seasoned logs were 45%-50% MC and if I wanted logs for immediate use to buy their kiln dried. Thing is kilned logs are not much below 20%. Process your uk logs, wack them in a barn for 12-18 months and you should have 16% or less. Then hammer the heat output against MC. From memory this is 25%MC-16 Mj/kg. 16% MC - 25 Mj/kg, ie 50% more heat from the same log.

I also came across another guy who swore that a 90x90x90 bag was a cubic meter.
