Most manufacturers do what are called inset stoves, these fit straight into a standard builders opening of 16 inches x 21 inches. If your opening is a bit wider then we install a steel reduction plate to reduce the size of the opening.

Very efficient and very straight forward to install, here is my most popular one:

Why opt for a tiny stove? We used fire board to seal the fireplace. Our stove vents out the back. And a 90 bend behind the board connects to a register plate at the base of the chimney.

The bonus is that you aren't heating the chimney breast to the extent that an inset stove does. Plus, with the vent at the back we can have a kettle and a pan on the top when the power cuts happen in the winter.

It does mean extending the hearth into the room though.

I put a small stove into my 18" fire place and it was not as hot as the open fire . So I went back to the open fire for a year or so . I have since opened up the aperture to 33" wide by 31" tall and fitted a Burley Hollywell . Now we are cooking ! You need to do the calculation for room volume against KW required . Measure the ht x wdth x lgth and enter them in one of the many automatic calculators on the net and it will tell what kw stove you need . My mate has got one thats too big . you need to stand in the garden when its on full chat ! So its importent to get it somewhere near right .
