Big big oak reduction today, massive spread on it, spec was up to 3 meters off, trying to bring the crown in over a period of years as its a fantastic tree but riddled with gano and hollowing rapidly, 2 climbers 6 hrsImageUploadedByArbtalk1416512690.999410.jpg.5363aa22dfe463662556854d7eff416a.jpg

Great work John, what's the thought process behind staged reductions? don't get me wrong I've heard of them I guess in theory it makes sense, but I would say just leave the thing be, or reduce it in one go.

Not knocking your work mind. Looks mint.

Fantastic looking tree and nice finished shape, always harder on retrenchment work as you have to try not to disturb any internal branches as you need them to eventually become the outer as you reduce ever inwards.

As Grey git says its retrenchment work, the tree has shed some big limbs, we are trying to bring it going as long as possible, probably another 5 years time we will bring it in again etc, reducing a lot in one go might push it over the edge, it's getting a proper kicking off the gano

Theory is to mimic the natural dieback and stagheading of the tree just without the deadwood so as the trunk and roots loos structure to support such a large crown it's being reduced inwards and an internal crown starts to form so still providing energy and not shocking the tree to much as work continues.

Think that made sense?:what:

Great work John, and well-explained Mr. Git.

I'm not a big fan of reductions in general, but can totally see the point in these cases.

That's a monster.

Hope the climbers had time for a beer before they fell asleep!
