Oh dear, another man goes to war on nature....

 

This will be the third year of defoliation, I have over 300 semi mature trees and everyone is affected to differing degrees, some totally, some partially some very little.

 

If there were a natural answer I'd use it.

Battle of the caterpillars begins,

 

stage 1 put up 15 bird boxes. Complete

 

Stage 2 will be install some feeding stations

 

Stage 3 remove feeding stations when caterpillars arrive

 

Stage 4 resident birds feed on caterpillars hopefully

Next stage the ASBO birds move in to the free, sorry provided housing and munch on provided food,enjoying the easy lifestyle.

Went down yesterday morning to put a load of feeders in and this morning when I went down I couldn't believe it, I could hear loads of bird song which I never hear down there. When I got to the feeders there were loads of little birds.

 

The only small bird I normally see is the robin and the odd treecreeper, today I,ve seen more birds down there in one day than I have over a year

 

I,m quite confident now this will work

The war has been won and no chemicals.

 

Found a single tree within the wood that was covered in web, felled the tree, torched the whole thing and presto....no problem this year, totally caterpillar free.
