First arb job for a career changer?

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies - even if they contradict each other ;)

As for why I'm doing this - because it suits me right now, and the economy be damned. Worrying to hear that so many people are training up right now though

*sharpens knives*

But I'd be really interested to hear from people who've done surveying/inspecting - particularly how they got into that. I guess the physical labour thing isn't such an issue with inspecting but I'm not sure how people start out doing those jobs.

you can't beat getting some time in on the ground in any job. I do a fair bit of

consulting but I started off knocking on doors selling logs from a tractor and trailer.

(many moons ago), went on to climbing, training with Fastco, got a qualification or two.

unless your going to write "the tree was viewed from the ground only" on all your reports, your going to need to do some climbing. Besides I find the best tree officers and

consultants are the ones that have worked in the job, instead of sat in office's with their heads in some BS or H & S manual

But this is the problem. On the one hand I have people saying 'you've got to do time working on tree gangs' and on the other I have people (including an agency I was talking to the other day) saying 'employers probably won't want you for manual work'.

At some point I'm just going to have to start ignoring advice :001_smile:

Response to Mr Ed again..fair comment? When I see ads for "arborists wanted, £80 per day" (or less), I realise that generally tree surgery isn't that well paid considering you are literally risking your neck...evidently a job you do out of love unless you are running your own outfit

If you are running your own outfit then you really have to love it!

To be an excellent arb consultant you have to have climbed and worked in the crowns and canopies of trees as a climber/tree surgeon for a good length of time. Coming from this background enables you to have a more thorough and complete understanding of how to identify structural weaknesses within the tree, the most critical part of tree inspection.

Many people who haven't come from a climbing background call themselves arb consultants, to put it simply, they're deluded.
