I am not saying I am tight but I always buy files for the 404 after a few years of running in they are just the right size for the top handle saw. I find the cheaper brands of chain stay sharper longer but are harder to sharpen and harder on the files.

I rub a chalk rock on my files every so often then using a wire brush or old tooth brush rub chalk out. Then twist the file through a rag. Files last me a heck of a lot longer. Also I use a length of pvc pipe(diesel fuel pipe) bent to kink it a little, over the file when not in use. Only on windsor files at the moment.

P.s DN22 that woodchip pile is half gone now.

I think files are only good for few sharpens , you can skite about with dull files and shred your pointy finger knuckle if you like , I have that lump of scar tissue that's tender even 14 years after doing it :(

Yep I'd agree on that - they last a few sharpens and then... they still work just not the same as 'out the box'.

sorry but the current batch of stihl files only last maybe 3/4 sharpens per file, then you may as well rub it with your finger.

as for all the comments of "you're using too many files"

whats everybody basing their assumptions on ??? do you know how many cutters i have ? cutting conditions ? etc

same for asking if my staff have 'sticky fingers'.. i trust my staff 100%, they handle cash, have keys to both my house and premises...

this forums getting far to opinionistic......in my opinion
