My mate got a winch for a caravan but i don't know if this would be any good as i don't know how i would attach it to a conifer tree, so could you recommend a winch just incase i got to buy one.

Wrong winch entirely. We will be referring to a Tirfor winch or similar but don't buy one - they're hundreds of pounds. You can easily hire one.

I'll send you a pm with my mobile so we can sort you in fell swoop!

And you're not near East Surrey are you?! :001_tongue:

Bury a milk churn full of ammonium nitrate, Sulphur and charcoal powder under the stump and ignite, that should shift it:thumbup: .......before someone does, I am only kidding:001_rolleyes::blushing:

Back on topic - just ordered one of those Fiskar X27 axes from the US, £53 landed......fingers crossed! Why is stuff so expensive here - 3 times the price in the UK!

You don't need a good axe, you need a cheap axe and a very good digging spade.

Or even better still a good stump grinder.

Digging out stumps just plain sucks but if your going to do it spend more time digging and undermining the stump than just trying to break it out with an axe.

I should know, I've observed people digging out stumps.:thumbup1::001_smile:

:dito: and if it was cut a while ago it could well be like trying to break up a slighty woody rock!

Going back to the burning question, it certainly is possible with enough time and effort.

As a side note, sodium chlorate was never approved to kill stumps as it can make them highly flammable.

Ive seen a few poor attempts, well lots of diesel, hole drilling and old engine oil but still left with nothing less than a charred tree stump that still needed grinding out.

I burnt out few alder stumps back in the early days but I dug underneath them, bored through the top and got a nice fire going.:thumbup1:
