totally agree with you there i have seen too many that i would not even wish to use as lowering ropes

life is more important than money

If you cant afford to buy a decent climbing line then you should charge a bit more, or find another industry.

i know a lot of climbers that are climbing on ropes over 5 years old

:thumbup1: Although I have just bought a new one.

You should try and break my 10 year old new england, your back would break before the rope did.

I frequently use my climbing line to lower, snatch stuff on etc theres no big problem with it imo.

cut and hold the odd branch although if its going to happen more than twice in a tree i generally ask for the lowering rope

and i would only ever lower up to half my bodyweight and if this did cause any wear

what's wrong with cutting and holding?what about reductions?do you spend half the the time removing your hangers?

When chogging down as the saw gets nearly all the way through, just before it starts to pinch push on the log with your free hand hand( yes I know) to lift it and allow the saw to cut all the way through. The log should stay in position if youve done it right then lifted and thrown or just pushed off. Saves on doing step cuts etc.

I normally tuck a plastic wedge in just before I finish off the cut

i don't feel like such a stand alone cowboy after this thread. i've never seen too much harm in lowering or zipping the occasional piece off my line.

here's a handy little trick i picked up. if your too far from the lowering line to be flicked to you(you also have to be reasonably below the lowering point), rather than tie the krab to your line and pull it up. get the groundie to clip the krab around your line, he then holds your line tight and pulls on the lowering line the krab then slips up the rope to you. easy and simple.
