I know a city ha sto have a cathedral.

Not strictly true, that just makes it a Cathedral City, like the cheese.

Newish cities may have had city status conferred onto them without having a catherdral although I couldn't tell you which these are [i know Birmingham became a city first and got a cathedral later...]

Pete's right about hamlets, villages and churches. What I'm not sure about is what exactly the point is at which a village becomes a town, I believe it comes down to facilities, population & governance...:001_huh:

It's based on amenities. A hamlet has a pub and a shop, village couple of different shops, post office, church along a main street. Town is a small group of main streets with a range of shops and services, city has a cathedral and a large amount off amenities, parks etc.

Rob that cant be right? Majority of villages around my part of suffolk dont have a shop, and a high percentage dont have a pub either but i'd happily say they are villages and not hamlets!

I agree, retail outlets are subject to market forces and are far too transient to be any sort of bench mark. The only quantifiable way to categorise would be by population.

I don’t know if there is an official definition of what makes a village.
