I have found that Blue tits and Great Tits will grab a bit of grub then skidaddle to a convenient branch away from the feeders  to get it down their  necks .  Long tailed tits and Gold finches will stay on the feeders to have a much up . .  Just what happens here .

Noticed similar, I put peanuts on a windowsill, blue tits land on a branch close by to assess things before grabbing one and taking back to a branch to eat it. Coal tits seem braver and go straight to the nuts, often stay to eat a few and then disappear

I find Coal Tits the least brave of the lot! They wait until there are no other birds about before coming to a feeder.  If something appears they're off like a shot.

A pair of Goldfinches have arrived in the last few days and seem to spend a good couple of hours a day on the sunflower hearts; we bought them for the first time a fortnight ago - what a hit with the birdies.

You're right Stubby, they love them and niger seed too.  At the old place siskin used to go for that but I've only seen one female here so far.

Pic 2 is Mrs Sparrow and she's a looker too.

I would dearly love to have house sparrows; their noise is permanently embedded in my mind as part of growing up in Rotherfield.

They're 200 yards from here, just up the lane, but don't seem to get down it this far. I suspect the greenery here isn't dense enough for them.
