ive heard that but never put 2 and 2 together as why. cheers dean makes sence as the trees always seem to have shake in them when logged up

I paid £70 for these 2 logs but would have paid £150 if there was no shake, no metal and no decay.

 

 

Rob, did you pay £70 for the timber and remove it off site or did you pay £70 for the timber and mill it in situ?

 

If it was the latter, did you clear up the debris from milling?

 

We have had a woodmizer and operator in on occasions to mill timber to customers requirements, but I have no experience of chainsaw milling.

I paid £70-00 for the timber and milled on site.

 

Customer even helped me load it into truck and mess was left... was at the back of garden and he wasn't fussed.

 

 

 

I find it really varies from job to job. Most mobile saw millers are not that well set up for cleaning the site afterwards.... the last ones I've done as contract style milling I left the mess but only after agreeing this beforehand.

From my perspective, with logs like that, I would prefer to have the site cleared and tidy when we finished the job, rather than more mess be made at a later date by another party. ( Not a dig at you mate, just generally speaking, as have had some poor experiences in the long past with involving other people in timber removal from site.)

 

If the same logs were available for collection from a yard and could be loaded into your vehicle for you to take away, how would this affect their value?

No worrys - a few people want the site left tidy but this then has a bearing on how much they get for the log....

 

 

If you had logs in a yard yep prob would be a few more quid... but unfortunately there's not many logs worth more than firewood. You either want very straight, knot free clean hardwood or something with very nice patterns, figure or burring and these are worth more.

 

Rippled sycamore is the one to look out for - that's worth a few quid!

Shake in Oak is always going to be a problem in light soils, heavy clay is usually a different story.

The theory always was wind movement is more likely in the lighter soils during the development of the tree.
