it is a bit of a joke that you can get 30k+ on benefits when there will be many couples out there who both work 40hrs a week and take home less. 26k seems like a lot when you look at it like that!

I think the solution is to change the way benefits are paid rather than reduce them, paid in vouchers (on a smart card) which can only be redeemed against essentials, food clothes etc, NOT sky tv, booze, fags, and sportswear.

There would just become a black market in vouchers.

My wife used to work for a collections department in a subsidury of Barclays Bank. It was her job to assess the amount the debter was offering to pay off each month, and what the agency wanted them to pay.

They had to fill out details of all their outgoings, both essential and luxury. Most of them came back with all those on your "NOT" list Tom, even some with foreign holidays and one with a budget of £1500 for xmas prezzies for two kids!

The trouble is, a lot of the people in this situation have lost the grasp of what is real and not.

Only ever been out of work for 3 weeks in over 18 years and that was inbetween contracts so no idea on benifits but seeing what the figures in this thread are it could be massively tempting if i didnt hate the idea to quit and go benifits, it would give me over a 50% wage increase per year!

I hate the Spongers with a passion, there better off than a lot of working families for doing nothing BUT nothing will change as there is too many "do gooders", bent MP's and whimps in the Government that like to shout but aint got the balls to really do anything about it.
