I think you should be treating this as a lesson to everyone to watch out for mistakes like that. You shouldn't make him pay for it, that would do more harm than good.

 

You just have to take it on the chin and lump it. Thats one of the downsides to employing people, if he keeps making mistakes and becomes nonchalant about it then P45 it is but you gotta teach young people and sometimes that costs.

It's not just the new lad who left the saw in the ways fault, everyone on site should be vigilant, especially with a new guy. Mistakes happen, luckily it was only a saw and not the newbies head. Lesson learnt, move on.

I left a 460 wedged in the fork of a tree below where I was cutting (yeah yeah I know) because I knew I needed it shortly after. Promptly forgot about it and dropped a dirty great chunk of log on it. Both handles, chain brake and fuel tank cream crackered. I didn't fire myself and I sure as heck should know better I also didn't make the same stupid mistake again. Cut the fella some slack.

You know him and his possible potential ?? it's a pain when stuff gets shagged but accidents can happen at least everyone went home safe.

I would just chat to them together and get them to gel as a team and say 'do it again then u will be paying'

i bet your not paying him much? if he is a keen young lad and is willing to work for not alot then i'd suggest sitting him down and telling him that.... "although the mistake he made was a big one, and by rights he should be fired, you think he's a good lad worth keeping and that you'll foot the bill this time. make sure theres not a next time!" think back to when you were that lad what would a knock like that do to your confidence? i'd try and teach him not punish him...

 

arb sites are often an organised chaos...for a newbie there is a hell of alot going on. IMO the others on site should look out for the mistakes this lad might make.

he could turn out to be a good asset as long as he learnt from this, as he was new to the job the climber should have been looking out for him & making sure everything was safe even if it did take a little longer to do the job. That's what training is all about, we all know we could go a job quicker without a new bloke to look after but give him a chance.

were you there? if so why didnt you watch him? if you were not there your regular guy should have been looking out for him.

This was a wake up call for him & your climber, it could have been on his head!!
