I found that after a couple of weeks using the sj that it all just seemed to work. I initially tried to use it with a extentable rope beolw it so as to beable to pull the rope from behind the sj but didn't get on with this set up. I now use the sj close in to my bridge and i think its best to persevere with this method.

Try a longer rope/strop. I use a 60cm tape sling larks footed on to the crabs. Make sure you don't make it too long otherwise you won't be able to reach the SJ to descend.

But does having a long sling in the system not prevent self tending???

when you have a sling in the system there is no need for self tending as you are pulling the rope through the bottom of the SJ so there is no slack.

Take the long sling out when you have got to your anchore point... A petal swivel and also a small tape sling so you don't have to keep undoing the Velcro are probably all you need mate.... Good luck with it!!

But is self tending pretty much the whole point, other wise just use a hitch.

You can do exactly the same thing with a hitch and pulley...makes descending very easy .... I seem to remember the vud with Tom d showing it when he climbs the monster spruce.

Only ever used a prussik and this is so much easier to climb and descend with.
