L14m, hated using them at first. Used them today on a very straight coppice type sycamore 70 feet , loads of strong ivy on tree. Without them job would of been a bitch. The more you use them the easier they get. Keep your legs straight and you won't slip.

Bricked myself when I first started spiking - and it doesn't help when they occasionally kick out but you do get used to it the more you do it.

Stick at it

Spikes are ace!!!!

Its just a shame that these days people get worked up about use spiking trees that are being retained.

Back in the day your spikes went on with your harness.

glad we progressed and good climbing skill comes into it now :001_rolleyes:

totally agree, i will sometimes use em on rough barked trees (monterey pine etc)if time is against me,cant even notice where youve been. I expect to get shot down in flames now!!:001_rolleyes:

Saying nuffin:sneaky2:

Anyway for the OP, you will get used to them eventually. The spindly slim stuff can be difficult to get a good balance but once you get the hang of them you will wonder why you didnt like them in the first place. Keep at it and it will become easier with practice:thumbup1:
