A how not to do it video

In the construction industry, the CDM regulations place a legal responsibility on clients to employ a contractor with suitable working practices and insurances. If they do not they must share liability in the event of something going wrong.

While I'm dead against further regulation and bureacracy, you have to ask, if customers were to face legal action should something go wrong as a result of work being carried out by someone of their asking without adequate insurance for instance, would it drive cowboys out a bit further or make no difference? Maybe...

But as was suggested, would you want to work for the sort of people who would rather take a risk on someone not knowing what they're doing than pay someone to do it properly? In honesty you probably wouldn't, because you'd probably find them to be just like the cowboys they usually employ...

I will work for anyone no matter what [usort[/u]......... as long as they pay!

Is it really fair to blame the customer?

It was in all probability the first time they ever had to get a tree attended to. They probably did not know of any other ' tree surgeons' and may not have been able to tell the difference even if they had.

They may have asked 'are you insured.' and when told 'yes' they were happy.

They were probably in awe of the brave chap with the saw, and the way they dissmantled the tree, because to a layman it is impressive.

I have to agree that it is sadly just ond of those things which will never change.

I can see why your all bit pissed off with cowboys like this, but every industry has them undermining the good of the industry. No matter how much legislation you produce the cowboy from the pub will always survive in any industry.

As a farmer we have lots of assurance schemes and standards , but there are still people who don't follow standards or who don't have farm assurance and they're the one who paint a poor light on our industry and are the likely cause to many of the farm deaths due to poor standards. Its called 'life' and we all have to battle with it unfortuantely.

(ducking waiting for the abuse to fly now :001_huh:)

Why get annoyed about something your not going to change? Your a pro and these lads are possibly not. Any energy you put into getting upset about this, would be better spent on thinking about how you can explain to customers how your different from these jokers.

That might seem silly, but pointing out at quote stage your insured and that you take the care of the tree and safety seriously makes you look great. If they then choose to go with someone else it's their call.

Ultimately, if someone were to post a vid of me trying to work on a car on a mechanics forum I'd get ripped. Doesn't mean I won't have a go. For all you know they might be homeowners. And I know.... Top handle and scabby harness.. Doesn't change the point, be proud your good and not angry others re bad.

Fair play mate, cant argue with that! My gut reaction was to be disheartened by the video - but hey ho can't change the situation, can only better myself and my lads :thumbup1:

The big problem I have with guys like this is that if they do cause a bit of a major problem they will in the van and off, leaving the customer in the shite and paying any bills.

Why peole are saying the customer is a fool and we wouldn't want to work for them is baffling to say the least!!!

The customer could have even picked the highest quote from the biggest bull crap speaker who looks like he's been in the game for years.

As said by others though don't let it worry you a two minute rant and a laugh is all they deserve.

And I know a few like this too:sneaky2:

Unfortunately I don't think it will ever change, just concentrate on doing your own good work and spread the message that way:thumbup:

It's not a panda hat, and they weren't white trainers.... the monkey up the tree is actually a very rare white koala wearing a human mask [which has slipped] and those are his white feet... This is why he demonstrates such prowess when nimbly navigating his way around the tree with no safety equipment [deployed usefully] whatsoever.... Obviously...

Additionally, koalas are yet to master the art of chain sharpening...
