Rope Wrench feedback

Ok so I had a go at making a whippel tether today, its turned out great its not the neatest of tethers but it will work, I think the coloured heat shrink sets them of as it hinds all the whipping and stitching, but I only had clear to hand, I had a load of 8mm ocean vector given me so that was my base. I folded the rope to create 2 eyes at one end and a single at the other to allow for the wrench, taped it into place and crossed stitched the eyes with 1.5mm whipping twine, then whipped over the top, couple of whips in the centre and near the top for a little support and then loads of shrink wrap, again not the neatest but for my first attempt I'm pleased ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358551209.090980.jpg.9b828fde99485e3fe892ab4e5b5c3964.jpg

You might have to clip a micro karabiner in the middle hole to stop the legs bending. Looks good though mate chuck leccy tape over it then it will cover all the whipping up.

It's solid with heat shrink mate, its stiffer than a ???? Well let's just say its stiff, I like the fact its done in clear wrap, the fact it shows everything is quite cool, gonna get myself a load of black and red wrap for my next one buddy! :thumbup1:

So I popped my RW cherry today, despite the snow.

It was a bit cold and I had a friend with me who is just starting out rec climbing so I didn't get to fiddle about that much, but here are my initial thoughts.

SRT in general for access, WOW! From setting a line randomly in the tree to simply getting off the ground, it's a revelation! My set up needs a lot of refining but I'm happy with my feet and the rope walker I have set up, it is quite literally like climbing a ladder.

I got the wrench tending ok with my strop thrown over my shoulder. I think I'm going to swap the hc pulley for an isc fixed one I have spare instead, it's basically a less sexy pinto but I think it will be a better arrangement. I'm also going to try some different cord, probably OP, I found my beeline a bit stiff on the edelrid static, it wasn't very forgiving.

I think I need a longer tether as well, I found the short one stuck the wrench to the hitch and I had to use the wrench to descend, which felt clunky. Is that how everyone else does it or do they release the top of the hitch itself in the same way as ddrt?

I'm going to get a top harness attachment to tend the hitch, the strop over the shoulder was fine until I got to an awkward crotch I needed to get through and wanted to use my strop.

Be interesting to try it on a take down, it's a whole lot more cumbersome than the choked line and fig 8 i use as a lifeline alongside spikes and strop at the moment so it probably won't catch on for me in that respect.

For up and down working round a crown I think ddrt is still going to be my preferred technique, but for things like lifts, or even pollards, I reckon it's perfect, quick up, quick down, onto the next one....

Exciting stuff!

Really interested in this. Could you not use some spliced friction cord instead of just stitching the eyes? Or is it better to have the 2 legs going back up to the wrench?

You probably could do mate, but I like the fact that not also do the legs give it extra stiffness but the tips to the legs also help stop the wrench from falling into a neutral position :001_smile:

Check out my whippel auction thread mate:thumbup1:
