Been asked by a friend into landscaping to help with some tree work he may get from a contract he's doing for a housing group. They have asked that we get a CSCS card before we do any work for them. Question is why do i need one, and is it worth it.

Thats the problem. The firm that got the contract have refused the risk assement we sent them twice but the same risk assement has been accepted by other firms for the same type of job with no questions. What is this CSCS card anyway another goverment way of getting more money out of you

Its a basic site safety exam that you need before you are allowed to work on any construction site in the UK, no matter what your profession is! Its simple to pass and only costs a few quid, i think it lasts 5 years. Its all the usual site safety stuff: colours of fire extinguishers ect. all very basic and almost impossible to fail if you have any common sense! Its got me work on dozens of occasions, all over the country!

As above it costs very little and is a multiple choice test on the computer at a designated CSCS quango's office. If you pass they give you a cert there and then and the card follows on.

Mine has just lapsed as it seems few sites I go to ask for it any more....as maybe that is due to recession and I'm going to fewer contruction sites than before?

Takes about 20mins to do- costs or used to cost about £50

get the yellow book before hand will help with fire extinguisher questions etc

But don't worry - you can get 6 wrong- Amazing!!!:sneaky2:

Did it a few years back- never been asked for- mind you I never bothered getting the plastic card so it's a good job.

Quite honestly- if you fail this test you shouldn't be allowed shopping in ASDA let alone working on a building site

CITB SSSTS Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme

Sorry to be the one to tell you about this one, if you have not heard. This a two day, £250 course for supervisors who work on construction sites. The CSCS card is too lightweight for many H & S obsessed/aware construction companies. These companies are insisting on this qualification. Strangely there is no photocard, just a certificate.

i took the £45 course and you'd have to be straight out of school to fail this, yes it's accepted nationwide but,as i've been told by most site supervisors, even basic nptc or even lantra are far more advanced for the job , unless your going to be a bricky's labourer for the day. your site specific part of your risk assesment should cover anything. i downloaded a 26 page checklist one before , gave it to them on disk format , that sorted em out.
