If a double glazing company flyer or door knocker came to my door I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

 

If they are not busy through normal business recommendations or adverts then it sets alarm bells ringing that they have to tout for work.

 

Best thing to do is do your own survey, knock on 50 doors and ask a few questions ie

 

What are your thoughts on companies who door knock?

 

What are your thoughts on companies who flypost?

 

Do your own market research.

Flyers are ok but you really do need top quality ones, full colour glossy etc or they look crap, the other thing to remember is thats it's a numbers game, don't think you can put 200 out and get 100 calls you won't, there is stats that say some thing like- for every 1000 you will get 8 calls and 3 jobs from them, it's quite low and to make an impact you need 10,000 delivered by a delivery company to the area's you want. I did this and yes it worked but it didn't bring work by the boat load, like Dean said proper advertising in local papers, sign written vans, yellow pages is the way to go, takes time but it works and the best one is word of mouth. fliers can be done in a stylish and informative way, even like a business card and you won't look like a pikey.

 

that said if you carpet bomb places with them it might not look so good, but there again, something that looks good would be fine, and generate business on what might normally be a quiet day.

 

We had fliers at Bartletts and were told to deliver them a few doors up and down from jobs, with the promise of a bonus if jobs were got from them -

I don't think anyone on the "front line" ever saw any bonuses though, so the delivery process was slack to say the least, especially with all the other work to do, though it has to be said that the rep didn't seem too bothered in getting them out when work was slow.

 

My background has been in club nights and music, so flier design and advertising methods strike me as simple, though some people are too prepared to just write things off.

 

For example, talk to the local press, write an article about the dangers of mismanaged trees, especially with the strange weather we've been having.

 

Public awareness can only be a bonus, and if your company is associated with that, then its the name thats on peoples' lips.

 

In answer to the question about printing though, we used to get century 23 in Edinburgh to do ours. There are cheaper places, but c23 have a quick turnaround.

 

You really shouldn't pay more than £125 for 5000 full colour, double sided, A6 fliers (though A7 can be compact and good).

 

oh yes, also make sure you get printed on good quality/weight card.

My personal thought is that business cards or fliers printed on good quality recycled materials, should also sport a note and symbol explaining that they are on a recycled product (especially in this industry) as this is another thing that will stick in peoples minds.

I would try it and see what happens, a lot of folk seem to be concerned about being perceived as pikeys which is understandable as everyone wants to look as professional as possible, but if i had no work i would have no problem with flyer's, knocking doors,cold calling etc in a pro and polite manner as bills need to be paid and the kids need to be fed.

And as for looking like a pikey you will look more like one if you have no income, lose your house and need to stay in a caravan!!

Got a call this afternoon, I asked how they heard about us; "we got a leaflet through the door last year, I kept it"

 

If I was a plumber I'd use stickers instead of leaflets with simple instructions to stick on your boiler. When it breaks you'd go and look at it and there'd be my number.

i think leaflets have a place yes indeed. i designed my own on publisher got them printed by a pro, they look good proffessional. i leave at the dentists reception and they go and i get work from them. i think if they look good, designed well and marketed in the correct way..use them. dont get stuck in a box regards advertising..think outside the box.

 

Word of mouth is the best way by far.

i give out fridge magnets with my details on.

 

if i were doing tree work and i desperate times you need desperate measures then on my leaflet i would have an offer.

have a quote for work and be in with a chance to win a bottle of whisky

 

pikeys dont do that!

plus with every quote the customer gets to see you are genuine from talking with you

Stickers are definately a good plan.

Stickers get stuck and people see them.

choose a design thats simple, nice to look at, and has a contact detail.

 

magnets are good too, as most people have fridges and printable magnetic media isn't too difficult to come by these days.
