I don't charge anymore but the demand here is for 8" logs.

 

Although last year there was one gent who wanted large logs. The ones I had were 'a bit polite' !

I cut my logs to the width of the saw, so about 6"

 

Smaller logs dry quicker aswell:)

The market is becoming flooded with small grates i have three pubs on my books which all have changed there open fireplaces to smaller more efficient stoves.I haven't done above ten inch logs for over 2 years,alot of my customers re split my stuff down to stuff double the size of kindling and find that's the best way to bun the wood in there eyes so everything is six inch or 7 at a push,and it dries out el rapido when smaller

I will cut them to whatever length they ask for. All part of the service and in any case I find that the smaller the log the less cord you need to use to make up the volume of a loose load. More air gaps???

I guess there must be a point where it changes but if I start with a trunk, each time I process it down the volume of the pile grows in size.

If you assume that a log needs wriggle room around its surface, then in theory, smaller lengths of log (assuming constant ish diameter) will need more space because more end spaces will be required per total length of log.

ie 1 x 12 log will need 2 x end spaces

2 x 6" logs will need 4 x end spaces for the same volume of firewood.

 

There are other variables like amount of settling and relation between log length and container diameter, but I'd argue that in average conditions, smaller logs take up more space.

I think more room is taken up by logs "bridging" and creating a gap under themselves, longer logs create bigger bridges, so they take up more space than smaller ones for the same volume of timber.

haha, well you all do alot more work with the logs than we do out here in france... we cut logs to 50cm (20inch).... and people are happy with that, if the want smaller they cut them down themselfs!

I dont agree (but thats my personal opinion). The larger the pieces, the less you need to fill the space. Try taking out all your bits of firewood from your trailer and putting them through a chipper, I guarantee that 2m3 of firewood will not be 2m3 of woodchip.
