Very sad

I wander if it was caused by low air pressure & prior to starting it was shifted threw the 4th to 5th gear gate then mistakenly left in a gear given you would get no drive in this state until the air pressure had risen above >6.5 to 7 bar ware upon the planetary gear (range change) would be forced into engaging driving the unimog in the relevant direction helped by the injector pump load governor, it would be like as if someone had just suddenly dumped the clutch especially if it was set to a fast idle rpm.

The above can catch out even seasoned careful people provided they have made the cardinal mistake of leaving it in gear even though they would get no drive to the wheels at the time (I.e. a false neutral state)

I have only mentioned the above in case the investigations into the accident by people who may know nothing about Unimog’s are at a loss to explain how something could happen post starting.

I'll try and find out more details when the time is right.

I know I'm speculating but he could have been on his own at the time, he had just advertised for a new groundy

Here the link to the local rag, just a sketchy description for now
