so much anger here......and bloody right! look at their house! they have a D4 tight fisted 'lots of stuff that cant be said' when i do a quote i always make notes on the job, access etc on paper in my diary etc, i write the quote and show it to the client and if they are happy with that i get them to sign, even if they say they are going to try other companies i explain to them that this isnt an agreement for me to carry out the works, this is a record of the price i have quoted, then if they decide to take it, its there. Verbal is legally binding, what gets me is if we were builders we could quote em 1k and at the end of the job say 'ooo sorry luv but it was abit more than we thought' and slap an extra 500quid on top and they wouldnt say bugger all..

It doesn't make any difference if you have 'I am going to sell your wood for a million pounds' written on your truck.

 

They agreed the price, and they owe you the money.

 

Tidy up properly and explain that if they don't pay you will have to get your solicitor to deal with it, and they will face legal charges on top of the bill.

 

Don't get mad, get your money.

For the record I would tell them if they don't pay they can have their tree back (because they still own it) tipped on their drive in load after load after load....

 

That is not the sensible route, though it has worked for me before.:sneaky2:

Horrible people, don't be dis heatened, leave it to a lawyer and get everything in writing from now on

 

I think the problem is now that often if you go to court, you get a judgement paying back a tiny amount per month and if you pursue it further the debtor claims harassment. Judges seem to be accepting that we are in difficult financial climate and will award very small monthly replayments. So a debt of £5k could take 3-5 years to get back without interest. Like I said in a previous post - if someone doesn't want to pay you they wont - and that sucks!

I think you are all right I did not mean to critisis the sign writing. Makes no difference whats written on your van. An awkward customer is an awkward customer they will find any excuse to wiggle out of the bill. Just stand there politely with your invoice and explain you dont give credit and smile. Keep the high ground and walk away a winner.

But (as others have said) the threat of a CCJ has never been more potent. Finish the job and go through the legal process. If the law fails you then your option to return their property remains open.

 

Still a bummer though and a lot of stress that is totally unwarranted. Best wishes.
