The old cement bags were knee wobblers for me and my 10 stone when I was 16.

I remember having to take 1 from Largs to Millport from Harcross, that was a ferry and a bus journey with a bag of cement and a fair bit of walking inbetween.

My boss probably just got me to do it for a laugh.

Had to fetch a "bucket of steam" from a boiler room once:rolleyes:

haha.

"Propwash" was my initiation at 16; go over runway to collect open drum of said liquid which was tap water and a toilet block lol. They filled it to the brim and I had to sack-truck it back to the hanger without spilling it on apron / runway as it would melt it! Every damn aero engineer was at their hanger doors killing themselves as I freaked with each little spillage!!! hahaha :lol::lol:

used to carry 100cwt sacks of cement now 25kg put two up on shoulder the other day. heard of the old boys carrying 200cwt sacks f grain on back. think i be on ground if i tried it even when young

Graham is correct, it was 18 stone sacks of beans not 16 stone.

Hedge sparrow I feel that 100 cwt of cement would have quite a detrimental effect on the body and 200cwt (10tons) might just leave you feeling a little flat!

I can't imagine many men nowadays capable of moving sacks like that. I've worked with body building types who brag about what they can lift and carry but they're pretty useless outside of a gym. I remember my old man who was brought up on heavy farm work...5' 8"..no great physique but arms and a back that were wirey and like hardened steel.
