We produce 1m3 every 20 minutes into truck/bucket/bulk bag with two men chainsaw and Balfor horizontal splitter 4 way knife.

 

That's on good straight timber upto 15":thumbup:

When someone offers you a grand to split some logs you dont say no. You think about it for a short while. Did a bit more than they claim for that machine. could have done with a seat me legs were killing me

I no some1 that was on a log splitter n he lost the tip of his index right off, he ran to the top of the yard told his gaffa and he didnt believe him. Not until he uncovered it n started shooting blood at him did he believe him. poor boy be carefull guys

 

how did he loose the tip of his finger if both hands were on the levers ?

Hi all,

 

I use a Palax Combi MII, circular saw with 6t apv splitter option fitted.

I normally load 5ft forklift and use straight from the forklift, no log deck required. I can process 4M3 per hour no problem by myself, sometimes into 1m3 crates or tractor tipping trailer.

It really does depend on the timber. 3" TO 6" in 10ft lengths is the best, easy to handle splits into a good size log.

As others have said don't get hung up on weight, volume is the measure.

 

Don't look at the log pile, Ipod on, head down, cut 'til you run out of diesel or daylight!

on our mess of a log pile, mixed lengths, rings and all sorts piled up, handballed onto our sawhorse, can do up to 20" logs, me and my dad can fill 1 IBC cage per hour so its about a cube per hour, not working major hard, but if it was just splitting, we can get about 3 per hour

Cor!, I feel a wee bit better after reading some/most of the above posts.

In that I was feeling a trifle inadequate in my firewood output (whilst working alone mind)

Anyway I had been swithering about

(i) either getting a firewood processor

or

(ii) cutting to nominal 1.0m length with a chainsaw, splitting, then running the split lengths through a circular saw with a wee elevator attatched, either after stacking & seasoning or immediately into vented bulk bags.

After seeing the palaver at both Wilsons & Fuelwoods demo days with the %age of the time the operators spent with the covers up "hoking" at the logs in the machine I concluded that a seperate splitter and saw would be better for my somewhat bent & knotty 30 year old Lodgepole Pine's.

Cept i only got one old tractor therefore one PTO only, therefore need to switch about.

The attached photo is approx 10cu metres; this took 4 hours with the splitter in the picture. The wood was in rounds before I started, also should point out I don’t do logs commercially just for my own use. The logs are predominately oak, ash, beech, and hornbeam.

50% of the rounds were seasoned which slows it down a bit!
