What to water seal a stump?

I have a dead fir to remove to around 12 feet. the stump has to remain as it is the central support for a big tree house.

 

My question is what ideas or techniques have you guys come across to water seal stumps or large cuts?

 

I have thaught about stapeling some canvas over the stump. Painting it with something (Don't know what)

 

The tree is not rotton at all, it is nice and dry. That the way it needs to stay to provide the support needed for the treehouse.

 

And yes it is probably the metal spikes and strangulation from the treehouse that killed the tree.

The best thing for treating timber would have to be linseed oil,also stops metals from rusting and lasts a long time

what about a piece of lead cut and dressed over the edges

Let it dry for a year and take all the bark off, then in the summer paint it with that thompsons weather seal stuff. I painted an old chicken hut with it once and water would still bead up on it 10 years later. It will rot from the ground up though whatever you do.

good enough for gate posts, also a bit of waste oil or creosote painted on and hidden under the lead or even MP grease!

Put a big wood bolt through the middle.Should be good.
