Mileage - what does it cost?

Hi all

I use my own car for work – and receive £0.34 per mile from my employer for this.

My question is – given the costs to maintain, tax, insure and fuel a car these days does this amount seem reasonable and does anyone know of a calculation/recommendation on how much it does cost to run a car for company use (including depreciation)?

Many thanks.

I knocked up a spreadsheet to answer this question for myself. Running an old R reg Peugeot 106, including all insurance, tax, diesel and all repairs/servicing over the course of a year, I arrived at a figure of 23p per mile. This was about a year ago, with diesel at £1.18/litre, and I covered 16,000 miles. Was 20 at the time and it was a new policy in addition to the van, so rather expensive insurance at about £130/month. Not a bad verified mileage cost.

The AA tables assume that you're Joe Public with a newsish car that will depreciate and that you pay stupid garage fees. 3.6 pence a mile in 'service labour costs' alone? I don't think so!

PM me if you want a copy of the spreadsheet, it's very simple.

I used to do about 40,000 miles a year, doing about £150 a week on diesal and never got a penny from the company, that sucked big time, did that for 2 and a half 3 years then sacked it off and got a new job, think yourself lucky for getting anything

i know people that are claiming back £0.48 per mile, people seem to forget how much running a vehicle does cost...... lets not forget most mpg figures are derived from motorway driving at 56 mph!! the government takes as much as it can from your pocket.... self employed or claiming back through your employer, you need to be doing the same, road tax, maintenance, wear & tear, insurance, vehicle depreciation, the list is endless!!!!
