Sorry to bring up another splitter thread but can't find the answer to this. Basically want to know what screw splitters are like compared to ram type ones. I'm gonna be building a splitter soon and it'd be a lot easier and cheaper to build a hydraulic powered screw type. Opinions please. Cheers mike

I had a Hycrack screw log splitter and it would go through all wood with no problems. Just remember to keep the wood to one side when doing small rings unless you want bashed hands!!!!

There is a firm I am told in Poland that do the shaft and screw threads to make your own version. Google/Images/Info

I think if doing odd shaped full of knots and rough wood there is no additional choice to the method. Some said the machine is slow.

The HSE aren’t all that keen on the PTO driven screw type splitters because it is difficult to put an effective emergency stop in the system.

The operation requires your hands to be in there so there is the inherent risk of “flat finger syndrome”.

Don’t whatever you do use your foot to push them on, I saw one poor bugger resort to that after suffering trapped fingers, he screwed the implement into his foot. The result was pretty gruesome.
