Its my understanding that thick ivy should not just be stripped, as this can cause the tree to suffer "scorch" from the sun. Its better to sever the ivy at the base of the tree and be allowed to die and defoliate, once its dead and the tree has had a summer of more sun, the woody parts of the ivy can then be stripped.

If they will pay to strip ivy( it would look different and let light through so its not a black dark mess) that's one route ,tell em on the understanding that it may then show some hidden dangers ie weak unions ,cavities but unless you cutt the ivy at base and leave it to die back a bit it will be a bugger of a job but then you be able to make a better judgment on the trees health and open options ie reduce /fell etc

They then themselves retain tree you get work with the possibility of more later on if it is doomed or they/you then decide to go further

Fell = you only will get paid once

Bear in mind nesting season will be just round the corner

Ivy clad trees are a nightmare . They also have the ability to hide major defects and decay . Tough one really but remember your working with nature . Crack on but explain to your customer by the time youve reduced it the Ivy will then probably take over the crown quicker . Take down replant for me :001_smile:

Why are you suggesting felling? Is there major decay or defects that you haven't mentioned? Have you carried out a climbing inspection?

If the customers want to retain the tree and there are no H&S implications in doing so, then surely that should be doing, not it's removal :confused1:
