I have just purchased a red led lamp to go on my .177 for rats, yet to give it a go but the light was £12.99, can't get any cheaper than that.

It's an older pard design, pretty decent for close quarters and just fits whatever you're currently using.

 

I'm certainly not removing a decent scope to fit some digital one for rats.

Steve go onto UK Varminting classifieds or the Stalking Directory, there’s always people selling kit to upgrade. Optics warehouse have some good deals online and do 0% on loads of stuff. 
I have an old Photon with a decent ir illumination torch on a 22 BSA Super Ten, does the job fine.

Have a look at the DNT Zulus. Lots of bang for your buck so to speak. Make sure you don't go for the 5x mag instead of the 3x by mistake.

That's just an IR torch, you'd need the day/ night optic to go with it.

 

Most newer day/night scopes have that built in which is fine for ratting distance.

Hi Steve . I don't know what you have narrowed down to but there are as you are probably aware  several quality air rifles available . I would recommend anything from Daystate  just because I have 3 of their products . They are bonkers accurate . Precharged . A sub 12 foot pounds is all you need for rats in .22 or .177 . A Daystate Huntsman Revere would fit the bill mate . ( with a good scope , Hawke or similar )

The daystate stuff does look pucker, but I wasn't looking to spend as much as that...probably wont get enough use to warrant it.

my other option is taking my old mans WW1 era BSA .177 to a gunsmith to get sorted out.

The only thing I would respectfully point out is if you are only using it " now and then " when you do use it you want it to be bang on accurate . No point in having something that is not no matter how much you use it .

You'd be fine with a decent springer for ratting.

 

I got my Walther Rotex RM8 .177 with a decent scope, moderator, bipod and gun slip for £500 second hand. Took it down the range and it was easily outshooting my mates AirArms which cost double.

 

If you want cheap night vision go for a red lamp. If you're prepared to spend more look for a decent used day/night optic.
