Unimog

I know a few of you on here are in the know about running Unimogs.

what are the day to day or annual costs associated with running a unimog (say a u1200ag) with pto chipper Vs a landy tipper towing a chipper.

I know that they are very different motors but as this is what we run at the mo the comparison would be usefull.

quite a lot of our work is off road so the capabilities of both these vehicles are usefull - though the landy being more apt for the Mrs jones's hedge type jobs.

thanks for any input:001_smile:

I would think double. The Mog is twice the weight, has twice the Engine and twice the number of gearboxes.Parts are quite pricey compared to LandRovers.

Each machine has its place,I would try and keep the landy to complement the Mog.

Also the Mog will have to go to an HGV mechanic if you can't do the work yourself.

thanks guys.

the mog would be a second motor so probably not getting as much use as the landy.

Hopefully this would keep wear and tear down to a degree and the landy can be usefull if the mog is broken

i would need to look into finding an appropriate mechanic for it. (i like to get stuck in but time is usually an issue).

what are the nitty gritty costs like mpg, road tax (is this req?), insurance.

driving licence requirements?

pto chippers seem relatively inexpensive.

Thanks again

the reasons i went down the mog was 1 pto chippers are cheap compared to tow behinds, tipping sites became easier, running costs were cheaper. My fuel savings monthly covered the finance easily. As for figures, i am not that sure, i would need to look at past books, but i ran mine on red and took the free rd tax.

mogs are great untill they breakdown.....bearing in mind most repair bills will be £1000 minumum ,that is what puts me off like a set of breaks put in to perspective against running against truck plus then there is driving every where at slow speeds on what can be described as a bucking bronco with chipper and worse loaded!does give a good feeling though in heavy traffic!

I've never owned a mog, but I've driven a few. I'd say that comparing the costs of running a mog with a landy is like comparing the costs of running a lawnmower with a car. An expensive bill for the landy might be £800 for a gearbox or £2k for an engine. you could easily spend £20 000 on the same for a mog.

Plus red diesel isn't any where near as cheap as it was a few years ago, and your mog will drink a lot of it.

Having said that I have spent tha last week wishing I had one.:001_smile:

HMCE won’t be happy if you get caught carrying goods on red.

You don’t want HMCE to be unhappy with you, they can fine you or impound your vehicle while they decide how much revenue you owe them.

MPG = >7 with a big trailer loaded, <14 empty on a long run, or about x2 to x2.5 times the fuel that a LR td5 would use.

tax = from £0 to £200 dependent on taxasion class

insurance = £250 to £750

licence requirements = B or C1 or C1+E or C or C+E dependent on taxasion class
