After watching my husband for years do our firewood I finally decided I was gonna pitch in and do my own bit and quiet recentley was inspired when i went to a local arts festival to find a woman chainsaw sculpter there,I guess in a way i actually do enjoy what i do when i busy doing the wood,im just not sure if i should take things that one step further and get myself educated in tree felling, maintaining etc ,i know a fair bit considering im a woman i just dont know if its worth going into.Just wondered what everyone opinions are on this and do you know of any women who are in this type of work?:001_smile:

I've seen a saw wielding woman working in the Colchester area a couple of times. My first boss' wife used to ground for him when he started out, and I've a friend whose partner used to help him out. So if you are game for it, I'd say go, it can be tough going though, may need to 'butch' up a bit :thumbup1:

Plenty of women in this kind of work and I think we have a current competition champion on the forum but I'm sure I'll be corrected if mistaken. If you're keen, go for it otherwise you'll never know if you can make it and might be kicking yourself for ever and a day. Don't mind what others say either; you don't need to be butch to do the job so long as you can think on your feet. The ladies tend to find ways around doing the heavier jobs and I don't mean avoidance I just mean they tend to use different techniques etc. I say give it a crack and see how you go, at leat then you'll know for sure.

Hi there its the best job in the world I started down this path uner 2 years ago and its the best move I ever made I am a girl and not far off 40 .

Go for it do your tickets and then do some work with local tree surgeons, companys it will give you lots of pratice and you will learn quickly and the best bit is its FUN Then do your climbing thats even more fun .

Every day I go to work I love getting up and putting my toys in the van its a wonderfull feeling that each day you will have a new tree garden ,or row of trees make look nice . I love the customers face when you have finished and its imaculate and they just love it its a great feeling to take home with you each day it beats anyother job.

Being a girl you bring different set of qualities into Arb work we have diffent ways of dealing with things but for the most of it using all the saws chippers and other toys being a girl makes no difference . A good level of fitness wiill help your passage no end it will make your ground working easy and for the climbing side well I think we have a real advantage when climbing for girsl fit and light makes tree climbing just fun all the way .

Go for it you will never look back its the best thing I ever did .

All the best

NO probs - just don't worry about how your bum looks in a pair of chainsaw trousers.

I have seen a young woman doing the climbing/sawing with a man for the grunty ground work. She was very assertive and did a good job. For me it's just having the aptitude for each job. I imagine with girls doing better at school, then more will have better grades to take college places.

get into it girl - I help my husband out - granted not as much now with 2 kids in tow, but when i can and if i can i will help, got my cs30&31 tickets, I decided to take the course when Mr. was having a course done for two of his employees - and take note one was another lady - My sister in law! and we all passed with flying colours - my sister in law is only about 5ft tall and she uses a MS180 stihl i think it is and she can manage that all day, brashing up and grounding for the lads - i know of another lady who runs her own tree surgery business - think shes on here, who comes and buys sticks off us - so dont let gender hold you back - its good fun and its better than sitting behind a desk all day - trust me ive been there! all the best j.

Fair play to you girl. I've only met a couple of lady arborists in the 27 odd years I''ve been around this business - I've always thought that due to the working conditions that it is a blokes game but get on and give it a good go.:thumbup1:

regards too you
