Get at least 1.6 tonne of pull. It's will get most things down without being overkill. Good balance between amount of pull and pounds in the bank. I had a 3 tonne one which was fantastic but i doubt i ever got to needing all 3 tonne of pull. It was kindly stolen from the back of the truck one day. I shall replace it witha 1.6t one. It was a jethoist winch rather than a proper turfor though.

Why not live with the weight and get a 5-ton machine that will not break and with which you'll be able to pull out the odd stump too? Got mine off the bay for £50 and that included 100' of rope but I doubt you'd find such a bargain now. True Tirfor or Griphoist brands seem to be the most highly rated; I've seen some negative opinions here of the contemporary stuff compared to them.

I have a “big” tirfor that barely leaves the yard but this Jockey winch gets an outing now an again.

OK it’s not going to pull a stump out but if you put a small pulley in there you get 1000kg of line pull and that’s plenty for pulling a tree over.

It’s smaller than my wife’s handbag and weighs a lot less……..

I'd get the biggest you can afford sensibly, it will be handy for self-recovery as well as tree work.Eg A laden Transit full of chip will need a lot of pull if its in mud, a little winch will struggle.
