I see. I think the way you do it was the old way I was taught, back in the days before ticket numbers it would be known as the 2 1/2 times bar fell ticket. Now known as big tree fell I believe.

 

In this case the bore cut would be at back cut height to meet the back cut, enabling more than a bar length from each side of the stem, hence cutting a hinge over 2x bar length.

 

I wouldn't normally say this was needed just to assist the pull/fall when reducing hinge length though, but guess it makes little difference as you say what height it's gutted out. 👍
