He didn't mean to. He was clearly using a smaller bar for the face cut, and over cut the centre of the hinge with the nose.

 

Bloody poor work IMO.

Bit of a mismatch on the bore cut height, but tidy Pete !

 

 

In what way Pete? I did the bore at the height of the base of the gob and back cut slightly higher. Would you cut differently?

I usually elevate the bore cut to the same height as the back cut if possible - 6 & two 3's really

 

7 monster transit loads today from a beech & a lime - glad we did not have to ring it all up !!

I see. I think the way you do it was the old way I was taught, back in the days before ticket numbers it would be known as the 2 1/2 times bar fell ticket. Now known as big tree fell I believe.

 

In this case the bore cut would be at back cut height to meet the back cut, enabling more than a bar length from each side of the stem, hence cutting a hinge over 2x bar length.

 

I wouldn't normally say this was needed just to assist the pull/fall when reducing hinge length though, but guess it makes little difference as you say what height it's gutted out. 👍

I also prefer to bore cut when felling a spar, then cut the hinge to where I normally would if it was a full canopy. Not sure if it matters where the bore cut is in relation to the backcut (within reason)?

As much a question but why did you bore the hinge when you have as biger bar as that?
