Qualifications.Important or not?

Compared to many,I have not been in the industry that long.

However during that time I have come to base very little value on industry related Qualifications.

The fact that these Certificates do not require the applicatant to perform said tasks in a production situation or at a pace attractive to an employer further the devaluation of these Quals.

I my opinion there is to little emphasis on time served in the industry.Personally I would hire a person with say five years experiance over a highly qualified person with just two.

The time when applying for a advertised job and arriving for your Trail day, hopfully obtaining employment based upon your abilities seem to have sadly passed.

It depends on what part of the job you're talking about - felling, surveying, tree officer, consultant etc.

Tree officer is about qualifications and doing a good points score on the interview, ya gotta get those equal opportunities questions right.

Its a strange animal...The guys I know in LA are banging on about quals this and quals that...I dont know how they get to do the job they are so busy getting quals And yet they also seem to covert the experience thing...but this just makes them want more quals!

Im all for quals....:001_smile:

This country has long had an obsession with quals .

Certs for this , that, selling paint and changing grinder discs!!

Hey, we all want certifying!!:blushing:

I am getting svere green thoughts when at all my CPD events eveyone is telling me that thier firm pays it, while Im not even getting the days from work paid let alone the course or seminar itself!:confused1:

It seems to me that the people who decide what Quals we need are those who have the least industry experiance.

I do not agree that Qualifications make for a more professional industry,or improve our image in the Customers eyes. For example, how many of a Mechanic's Clients ask for his Quals? He is working on a machine that if it should fail, could kill the Client and Family.
