Especially if they have heard the tales of riches from taking trees down.

Thats a very good point!!

a good point but it illustrates the point the need for experience before going it alone, if the other firm (possibly startup as previously said) had experience, they would have been able to offer a competitive quote alongside andys. maybe the other firm has too many overheads, kit on tick? maybe andy has no overheads and no finance?

The higher priced company has been going some time now, dont know what kit he has, the mid priced company is a very large company with masses of kit and loads of staff, and its own training centre. I'm applying for charity status!:001_rolleyes: But there were no inexperienced firms quoting this one. We may have been fractionally too cheap, by about 100quid, but to be nearly a quarter of the price of the highest quote made me raise my eyebrows, it really was an easy day, not a ball-buster, and to earn 650 per day I dont think is bad in this economic time.

On Josh's points, I have minimal overheads, no finance etc, each person earned good money, and a healthy profit margin to boot.

you have to wonder, particularly in the case of larger companies quoting, who did the quotes. do they have specialist people who just go quote? or do they get whichever of the lads is passing to quote? i wouldnt rule out if it were the latter the possibility of the jobs being priced high as they wanted a few easy days work?

Think you hit the nail on the head Steve,

that’s probably what happened if the second quote came from who I think it did:sneaky2:

They do have a contracts manager who prices domestic, but with no past arb experience, normally up to the lads to work how long It’ll take, they’ll be on a standard day rate, then he’ll whack a massive OH charge on top

This was exactly our thoughts at the time!! I am led to believe that the lads are offered 10% of the price for finding private work, but this is capped so I'm not sure. The highest price bidder does his own pricing.

I'm starting to wonder if some companies really want the work. confused1:

...Not only bigger outfits. Went to price a straightforward removal of a 40' picea some weeks ago. We did it in an average day under average conditions - no issues like bad targets, poor access, rotten tree etc - so charged an average day price. When I'd quoted the client's face lit up as the only other quote he'd had (from a local small outfit)was 'well into four figures'. It took two blokes a day with two vehicles, three saws and a chipper. 'Four figures'!

there is maybe a reason why these companies are big, they price a lot of jobs very high and dont mind getting 1 out of 10 of them. While you were doing that job for £650 Andy they might of been away doing half a dozen jobs at £2.5k that day.

Agreed Steve, the domestic work for a major contractor probably aint worth the grief. But the highest bidder has hardly any work, owes money here and there, and is desperate for work!! Perhaps he thought he'd found a cash cow and was gonna milk it dry.
