my 2 penneth worth..

Rupe said it right on page 2 or 3 of this thread. You do only need a limited amount of training to be classed as competent to do most things this job has to offer. If you did nothing else but train day after day, you could have all nptc's and isa treeworker, isa certified arborist, pa1/pa6, ipaf etc etc etc in under a year. You would appear from the outside world as being ultra qualified and at the top of your game, but that wouldnt make you skilled.

A top heart surgeon is a skilled profession.

Although.....................Stuntfelling makes you skilled, Doing bore-cuts blindfolded makes you skilled, branch-RUNNING backwards makes you skilled. haha

BTS how did you get on with your appeal. I take it you are in local authority? I went through the appeal procedure to get paid slightly more than a grass cutter but lost even though I gave them everything. Even all the gardeners said that arborists should be on a higher grade than themselves

They are grass cutters, not head of the wage department.

So why would an un skilled persons opinion be considered?

The guys in the trenches will always complain.

The only way is to change your life, if you dont like others making important decisions about your life, then get out of that position. or you can just moan and not get listened to.

The appeal is an ongoing thing and could take months apparently, you are correct local authority, and the other lads agree the arborist should be on higher pay scale, not taking anything off the grass cutters all top lads but they are not regularly putting their lives in damger climbing large trees and using chainsaws.
