No, I am more than happy now that I know my position in life is just an unskilled noddy labourer! at least now i can stop trying so hard and just do a mindless task without having to think about complicated stuff!

All together now, Awwwwwwwwwww!!!

Rupes got a point, it is classed as semi skilled, That doesnt mean your not skilled tho mate, As you clearly are

Tony, your a skilled guy in a semi skilled proffession. There are plenty of un skilled climbers in the same semi skilled proffession.

The catagory does not define the level of skill a person has within that catagory.

Nail on the head IMO!!!!!!!

I think if you are qualified and insured to carry out tree surveys then you could say that you are doign the equivelant of the bridge designing bit, and so you would be catagorized as "skilled".

Weve been through this before and there is nothing to say that we are not qualified to carry out tree surveys.

This thread has gotten me sooooooooooooooooo wound up its pityfull.

Sometimes I wonder if SWB has got it right, get yourself sorted, kit and all, keep the numbers low, keep your clients local and sweet and just mind your own business and do it "your way" and stuff the political ethical H&S AA Elite- BS

Enjoy what you do AND your life and stuff the rest of it!

its all about earning a living after all, and Stephans a happy chappie, i think i am trying too hard in a world that fails to recognise it, and this classification proves it.

ARGGGGHHHHHH!

What chance have we/this industry got of achieving recognition if that industry is considered unskilled or even semi skilled!

Rupe your analogy trades = semi skilled, engineer = skilled is wrong.

When I started in a welder fabricator shop, with City and guilds welder Fabricator quals I was classed as semi skilled due to lack of experience. After some years with no more qualifications I would qualify for skilled pay.

All the trades are skilled. If some employer classes you as semi skilled, its just a lower pay bracket for those with less time on the tools.

Tree surgery, or plumbing, or brick laying are not semi skilled trades, they are skilled trades

What recognition do you want to recieve? Its just a job, its only there to pay for holidays and beer and women ( I don't mean pay for them directly, by the hour or anything!!)

Of course its great job if you enjoy it, but making others appreciate what you do will always be like shoveling smoke.

I don't think I have it as sorted as I would like and SB (SWB) may have found the perfect balance, I'm still trying. But recognition is the last thing I need, a few more top clients and I'd be happy.

And I think there is a good balance between HSE requirements and waht you refer to as elite BS, that can be achieved so you get good work but without being too arsy about it all.

I may be skilled in tree work but there are aspects of running a business that I find really really hard, much harder than any tree I've done and I don't always think I have the skills to achieve what I want but I keep trying.

the people carrying out the pay review have never had any arboriculture experience at all

Thats usually the case in life!

Professional tree workers are all Skilled, some to a greater degree granted, monkeyd, Hancock, tony sorensen, hamagayad etc but yes were all skilled at what we do.

Fair enough. I didn't think opinions or analogies could be wrong. End of a good converstation then, thanks.
