I guess i am going to have to swallow my pride and fess up, maybe you lot are right, but one things for sure, this threads going to give me plenty of incentive to get the hell on with my degree so i can get away from THIS kind of crap. At least as a consultant i will have SOME dignity and pride!

we are proof that its an unskilled job. its not rocket science, climb up, cuts some bits off, if you dont want it to hit something then tie it on. when i got the blue tooth headsets for the helmets, i realised you could get a novice up to speed instantly, by talking in their ear telling them what to do, they didnt need years of knowledge, even up a tree , i could get them to put in little gobs, cut from one side, hold in a certain place. even reversing trailers and felling. remote controlling numpties i call it, and having the perfect birds eye view makes it even easier.

 

i am not saying i had unqualified guys swinging from tree to tree, but i had no downtime explaining stuff.

Thats great, go for it, its not a flaw. But you could spend the rest of your life happy in the woods looking at funghi, or unhappy cos no one recognises the fact the you spend all your time in the woods looking at funghi.

what are you going to do when someone calls you up to do some consulting on their trees and doesnt speak to you in the tone you obviously think you will deserve? throw a fit, give them a lecture. WHO CARES!!!!!!!

if you dont like it, move on. if you think you are worth more ten go and do it yourself and write your own job title, hell for £120 you can become a managing director of your own company:biggrin:

Tony IMO you need to start valuing your own opinion of your self more and worry less about what others think.

 

You are a very skilled and knowledgeable arb, you know that and we who have read your posts and seen your pic's know that, so why do you need any other form of recognition??

I get calls saying can you come and lop my tree..

 

I say yes, go and see them, talk about the weather and the cat, explain in one sentence the way I like to see a tree trimmed and send the quote with it explained there too. I don't do bad tree work but I don't care if people understand what I do or not. I'm good at explaining it and I get a good proportion of those jobs but if they are after cheapest quotes then I don't want to waste my time trying to teach them anything.

For the record I agree that within any trade there are "un skilled" "semi skilled" and "skilled" workers in the way you describe. So qualified makes you semi skilled and add to that experience and you become skilled.

 

I think I was refering to proffessions as a whole, where tree work (and most trades) are in the semi skilled catagory. IMO.

because i want to be better, i want to do better, i like trying, I like learning, i like chalenges, and BIG ones and i want the pay grade that others well below my ability seem to get with little effort, i want to be pushing the knowledge, writting the pieces, changing perspectives and protecting the NAW's sites. I want to help farmers make a living but also be able to protect the trees that suffer through modern agriculture, i want to preserve RD species of fungi, even promote habitat creation SPECIFICALY for them, it goes on and on and on.
