I just take a lot of the back weight off to make sure it goes the correct way.  I have even been known to cut off limbs from the backside and stack them in the felling direction to tip the odds in my favour.

In over 20 plus years, I think I have taken an axe and wedges up a tree with me only a handful of times.

Taken a small felling bar up there a few times though.

Looks like a disaster waiting to happen honestly.

Either by falling off your harness and smashing something/someone or by going through the chipper.

Both ideas with much greater mileage than the cone yoke. Cheers.

Some American on Instagram the other week did a reverse gob a foot or so above his back cut for the heel of his free hand to push the top over easier, which I thought was a nice little trick.

Stupidly simple like all the best ones.

I once cut the fluff off the back of the top but left a 3’ long stub about 2’ above the back cut. Put it on my head and stood up as I made the back cut. Did make sure mainline was low and choked so I couldn’t jump off the top of the pole.

Makes it much easier to spot if the groundy's still working as he wanders about, clutching his head, with that sticking out of his helmet. 😁

That's what the hole is for, tether everything. How about this for a gadget: a telescopic felling lever. Three part, a foot long collapsed, say, 2 foot 6" extended. Thick end has the foot-wedge. Skinny end has a blunt hook. Double duty as a grabbing hook for fishing ropes, branches etc. Make it of fairly heavy gauge fiberglass, foot wedge is aluminum.

I use these, small enough to fit in the arbortech mini pockets, I dont know what the pockets are intended for?

40p each, chop the ball end off with silky and drill a hole for some spare starter cord in a short loop.

I've bought lots. I often drop them , cant tell how many I've lost. I should get some bright orange paint...
