I'm considering moving lads to paye who are on day rate mainly subbing.

What's the legalities of travel time pay when an employee is on the books? We some times work commerically up to 2.5 hours away from base each way.

One assumes you do that Monday morning and home Friday?

Not always some days we just drive back and forwards as the lads don't want to dig away

As per mark, it's all hours but realistically anything more than say 1.5 hours and it's digs territory especially if it's 3 hours of sitting in a van.

Some places set a nominal 'commute' time - say 30 minutes, any travel time above that is paid, up to that is assumed to be a commute... if they are leaving from home and not meeting at your yard... - not sure how that stacks up with insurances though if you are in work vehicles and not working, or own vehicle if driving to different sites - would need to check that out... Usually seen that done if they get a works van

Probably best if the numbers work out right to pay all travel time

I looked into this about ten years ago when I wasn't happy with the pay we were getting for travelling. It might have changed but back then you legally didn't have to be paid anything for travel time so long as your pay divided by weekly hours including travel time meets minimum wage.

Obviously if you want happy productive staff then paying them their usual rate is the way to go, if the job can absorb the cost. Worth considering how much travel either side of a work day is sensible, if there was an accident on site or a car crash on the way home because of fatigue from long days. We used to be offered accommodation on any site more than an hour from home.

Different situation as I'm on day rate, but if we're working more than 45mins away, there's a bit of extra cash to cover the extra time.
