Son reckons under his licence,  he can only tow upto 3500kgs combined weight? I've said that the MAM allowable for his car and trailer can be more if the car weighs say 2000 and the caravan is a tad less than 2000 too. This subject has been batted to and fro ad infinitum and we can never agree. What is the truth?

 

I thought that the regs changed to get rid of the sub 750kg thing and reverted to under 3500kg if the vehicle is suitable!

Yes but I think those  who got their full licence after 1997 have to ask for BE to be put on the licence, else it should be added at renewal.
