Quieter hedge trimmers

I wouldn't bother with electric hedge trimmers unless you are doing a regular light trim job. I don't use a Kombi system either. I rather use dedicated tools for the job. I use the HL94 long reach with the angled head for all my hedge trimming work. Wearing ear defenders isn't an issue for me.

I don't do a vast amount of hedge cutting, but there's a number of hedges I cut only once a year with the top of the range husqvarna battery machines. The 70cm handheld, and the telescopic long reach. Poor old petrol trimmers sit in the shed gathering dust, no use for them now.

I dont mind ear defenders but the protos ones are not great.

I'd be happy with petrol if they were as quiet and easy starting as my Echo 2511!

Afaik most 2 stroke tool exhausts are a hollow chamber with a spark arrester screen. I wonder if adding some exhaust wadding would work and not screw up the mixture, or catch fire!

I have a load of tabs open to look at, of cordless hedgers but not had time recently!

In a word, no, bunging up the exhaust wouldn't be so good.

Might be able to do something with a larger chamber and a couple of baffles inside, perhaps double skinned... ask those who mod saws what they do to make them louder and do the opposite... but clear path for the exhaust and no back pressure that wadding would give (2nd or 3rd tip for a poorly performing saw is always check the screen is clean)

I've used a kombi Stihl hedgecutter for years now with the hedgecutter long reach attachment. I got it so I could change to the pole saw attachment when needed

Is the dedicated HL94 any better for hedges than the kombi? I never researched if it was lighter or anything. The sound from mine is completely deafening I don't know if that's unique to my machine or not..

Is it a 2 stroke or a 4 mix engine? The latter are a fair bit quieter with a less piercing tone. I find the 2 stroke much more reliable to start - the two 4mix KM90s I have can be pigs to get going once hot

The 4mix hard to start when hot problem is due to the valves needing adjustment- very simple to do.

I just checked it's a KM 131R. Which when I google says is a 4 mix engine? It has been absolutely abused which may factor into it
