This is a fact I’m just discovering. It’s a skilled trade and it seems unless you are self employed you don’t get the financial recognition. Also when you have a mortgage etc it’s a very real factor to consider.

You can do quite well as a contract climber, but frankly you will be starting to late to do that.

It's going to take 5 years full time climbing to get any good ,by then 25 year olds with the same experience as you will be getting faster as you at 45 will be slowing down.

Start your own gig if your keen

Couldn't think of a worse idea at the moment...domestic arb work is 9/10 a race to the bottom which many a time leads to firms paying peanuts. Then lads attempt to start up for themselves in the hope things will be rosier. Keep doing what others say "money isnt everything " but time and your body will soon tell you otherwise.

Seems like most experienced voices are saying no. Will have to stick to what I know and do the tree work as a weekend job.

I had a lot of negativity on my post (now deleted) but when I spoke to actual people in real life it was a much more balanced outlook. Life is too short to not give stuff ago. You might hate it, make no money etc but at least you can say you tried.

Why did you delete it?

Starting your own gig when you haven’t got a clue what you’re doing is a bad idea.

You’d also need thousands of pounds worth of kit.

You need a chainsaw,a rope and a sense of adventure.

Why not do your rope access qualifications?

With your welding experience I would think the money would be very good once you get your climbing hours in and progress levels.  The would always be the option of NDT, again good money.
